Aisling's Daily Collages
25 April - 9 June 2002These are quick, daily collages used as "morning pages" (ref. The Artists Way, by Julia Cameron) to start the day. Click on any one to see it larger. Most collages are 50 - 90KB in size. Or, click the text under the image to read the diary entry with it. (And yes, as soon as there's time in my schedule, I'm breaking this page into smaller, faster-loading pages.)
When I completed this journal, I launched into a larger format, and each is a text page facing a collaged page. Right now, those appear at my diary page.

9 June (b)Artist's Statement:
I decided to see if daily collages could provide as much personal insight as "morning pages." I start each day with the page already date-stamped (so I feel compelled to complete a collage that morning) and a stack of magazines and newspapers. I also have a portfolio filled with saved collage elements, in folders.I select pictures, words, and phrases at random, based on whether it seems to catch my eye. At this point in the process, I don't think, "Will this fit?"
In many cases, the idea I think I'm starting with turns out to be very different from the finished art. For example, on April 26th I had the idea that I was looking for spring greens (this was correct) and phrases relating to coming forth, emerging, blossoming (this was wrong). Instead, the words were about dialogue and perhaps a meeting of the minds.
My art is usually about color. However, other important ingredients include texture and layers. So, I use a lot of overlapping, and I connect images with colored tissue paper. In some, there is an element of the sacred, either through religious images or reminders of Nature. Often, I add gold or copper leafing, to highlight opulence.
So far, this is a very successful project in terms of art and astonishing insights.
And yes, on days when I think I'm "art-ed out," and have no idea what to create on the page, the collage still emerges once I start turning pages and seizing elements.
