Raspberry Sunrise
This is from a time when I was painting most mornings, spending twenty minutes or less on quick oil sketches. My chosen landscape was always the field in my backyard, and the wooded hill beyond it.
It was a great way to start my day. Usually, I was happy with my work. Sometimes I merely learned from it, and then began the rest of my day with a smile anyway.
I painted this 9"x12" canvas at dawn one late-summer morning. The sky was an amazing, raspberry pink color and I scrubbed on the paint as quickly as I could to capture it. In less than five minutes, the color had already changed and faded, but the memory of it is here, on a hastily-executed canvas. That raspberry hue made the foliage glow a bluish-green, and everything light took on that pink coloration. Wonderful and rich! Reminded me of some science fiction illustrations.
