The Edgar Allan Poe Shrine is one of my favorite original art assemblages. To see a scan
of it, full size (89K),

white dots are dust on the scanner screen. The red line along the top of the poetry
is not really there, just some anomaly in the scan.)
The art assemblage elements include a
raven
printed on muslin, in three sections. Black feathers
and dried Black Malva flowers, plus dried wild rose petals, accent these compartments.
The portrait
in the oval frame is Virginia, Edgar Allan Poe's great love. Dried wild
rose petals, gathered at the seashore in Maine, rest in front of her portrait. At the right,
you'll see a leaf of dried sage.
To Virginia's right, there is a
skull
which was hand-carved from
a deer's antler. In front of the skull are brass-colored metal candlesticks and dollhouse
candles (probably plastic).
In the center section, the
lines of poetry are from The Raven.
Next, a golden and teal-colored pillar represents Poe's famous
Fall of the House of Usher.
In the bottom row, the center image shows a photo of Edgar Allan Poe. I've modified this so
it looks somewhat pointillist, and a little eerie.
At the far right is a limbless china doll's body. I'm not certain why I included
it, but it adds to the Gothic sensibility of the art.
The outside of this wooden shrine has been painted black. On the back, I've
glued a title card and signed the piece.
This art shrine is about 8 3/4 inches wide, and about 10 1/4 inches tall. It was
completed in late September, 2000, and placed in eBay for sale, where a happy art collector
purchased it.
