Left page: a hand printed on a photo of a rustic garden scene.  Many purple and white flowers, and some teal and rust garden accessories.

Right page:  "...what we really gain from the artmaking of others is courage-by-association." --David Bayles and Ted Orland, in their book, Art & Fear.

This is one of my favorite quotations, because it explains so much.  It explains the relief we feel when we discover another artist working in the same genre and/or materials as we are.  It explains the tendency of some timid artists to copy our work, feeling safe and validated by their mimicry, albeit unintentional at times.

Mostly, it reminds me of the importance of associating with other artists, and seeing their work.  By finding courage in their art statements, I'm able to stretch myself one step further into unexplored realms.
