Sometimes the landscape isn't particularly inspiring. Other days, it is oddly inspiring. Nothing brilliant or memorable about the scene, but the light will be "just so," or the shadows will have a quality that strikes my fancy.
In other words, I wouldn't dedicate dozens of hours to creating a formal painting of the scene, but I'll happily dash off a ten-minute oil sketch to see if I can capture whatever-it-is.
The morning that I painted this, the sky was overcast and there was that odd, pinkish tint to everything. I tried to capture it and succeeded in creating a painting very different from the others. The colors are muted, and there's more detail as the light was so revealing. The canvas was slightly larger than usual. It's not exactly a plain landscape, nor can I call it melodious, despite its almost lyrical colors. No, the way the colors play off each other, reminds me of a scruffy but loveable cat, and I really can't tell you why, because I haven't a clue.
