This was painted during the time when I was committed to consciously working on my painting. I'd throw a few canvases into the car along with my paints, and drive around until I found something to paint. That was probably a little manic and not exactly muse-inspired. However, it seemed to work, short-term.
On this particular day, I paused to paint (and photograph) a freshly-planted garden in coastal New Hampshire.
I started this painting en plein air, which means right there.
I completed it at home, from my photos. This garden is in a wonderful waterfront park across the street from Strawbery Banke historic center. The Park is known for its outdoor concerts and its flowers, including the tulips which you can see in the foreground. They were in full bloom when I painted this.
This painting won First Prize for oils at the Buckman Tavern (Lexington, MA) 1995 outdoor show. It's on a 16"x20" canvas framed in an ornate gold frame. In this photo, you can also see the blue wallpaper on my kitchen wall when we lived in Stratham, NH.
