Living Color: A Writer Paints Her World by Natalie Goldberg is
easily on my top ten list of favorite art books.
If you want to keep an illustrated journal using your own and drawings and paintings, Living Color is more than a must-read, it's a must-own. Whether or not you have any experience with drawing and painting, this book will inspire you.
Natalie Goldberg is perhaps better known for her books about writing. However, as much as I have enjoyed her other books, this is the one that I referred to regularly. She takes the mystery--and perhaps the scariness--out of drawing and using colors that please you to illustrate your journals.
What I especially like about this book is it is unpretentious. Ms. Goldberg aspires to convey the impression of the scene that she is illustrating, not an attempt at a photographic representation.
In other words, she shows us that you don't have to be a professional or skilled artists to create wonderful drawings and paintings.
In text, Ms. Goldberg explains how she began drawing and painting. Then, she shows us how she learned to become comfortable with her art.
You will be inspired.
If you have thought about illustrated in your own journal, especially a travel journal, this book is a must-read. In fact, if you plan to travel with me and explore journaling on-the-go, this book will give you a head start so that you can begin journaling on our very first day.
This is a book that I take with me regularly when I teach because it is so powerful and helps break through artistic barriers. It is one of my favorite books and I can recommended with confidence.
