Glastonbury, one of England's most fascinating towns
Chalice Well Gardens, in Glastonbury
Glastonbury is a glorious town with wonderful ancient buildings,
amazing landscapes, fabulous little shops,
history, and folklore... something for everyone.
The town of Glastonbury was long regarded as the location of the world's first Christian
chapel. Glastonbury Abbey holds the tombs of
King Arthur
and his queen, and the legend of the Glastonbury Thorn--brought to England by Joseph of Arimathea--is fascinating.
There is real, archaelogical evidence that Jesus' ancestry was from this area, and
that he visited Glastonbury as a child.
The water
at Glastonbury's Chalice Well, seen above,
is safe to drink, and reputed to have miraculous powers. Does it spring from
where Joseph of Arimathea buried the Holy Grail?
Be sure to wear your walking
shoes for the hike to the top of
Glastonbury Tor. It's an easy
climb, and a must-see. According to legend, Merlin's crystal palace is inside
the Tor. King Arthur may also wait there for the promised return of Camelot.
According to lore, the faeries hold their summer festivals every
year at the foot of the Tor.
Whether or not you believe the stories, I heartily recommend the
fair (flea market) in the middle of town, where you can find some wonderful treasures!
You'll also find
plenty to do, for
at least a two- or three-day stay in this fabulous town.
